SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Melissa Belmonte (South Boston, Mass.) notched a hat trick as the University of Massachusetts Boston scored four times in each of the first two periods and cruised to an 10-0 win versus Saint Michael’s College in ECAC East women’s ice hockey action on Saturday at Cairns Arena.

For the Beacons, freshman Casey Turner (Melrose, Mass.) added two goals and three assists, while sophomore Andrea Ciarletta (Watertown, Mass.) tallied a goal and three helpers. Sophomore Amanda Boucher (Billerica, Mass.) turned aside 12 shots in the shutout for UMass Boston (7-8-0, 6-6-0 ECAC East).

For the Purple Knights, freshman Alyssa Fitzpatrick (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha’s Vineyard Regional), making her first career start, stopped 16 shots in one period of play. Senior Marcy Ring (North Attleboro, Mass./Saint George’s School) added 22 saves in the final 40 minutes for Saint Michael’s (4-14-0, 2-11-0).

UMass Boston opened the scoring just 5:21 into the contest, as junior Molly Norton (Milton, Mass.) connected from in close for an even-strength goal. Less than three minutes later, the Beacons doubled their lead, with freshman Katherine Wall (Arlington, Mass.) slipping a shot through Fitzpatrick’s legs for a power play score. Belmonte gave the visitors a 4-0 advantage with a pair of even-strength tallies 2:45 apart late in the first period, the first coming off of a rebound, and the second coming off of a deflection from just outside the crease.

The visitors tacked on four more goals in the second stanza. Turner scored her first goal of the contest on the power play 4:21 into the period, and Belmonte completed her hat trick 2:18 later. Turner lit the lamp again at the 14:11 mark of the period, and just 52 seconds later, junior Kristin Wilson (Grand Forks, N.D.) potted an even-strength goal.

The Beacons completed the scoring with two goals in the final 4:14 of the contest, by freshman Kate Webb (Falmouth, Mass.) and Ciarletta. Saint Michael’s best scoring chance came 5:30 into the third period, but a breakaway attempt by freshman Kate Morey (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) was gloved by Boucher.

Saint Michael’s returns to action next weekend, as the Purple Knights play their final two home games of the season versus league-rival Salve Regina University Feb. 5-6.
