Phone: (802) 654-2537SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman Casey Turner (Melrose, Mass.) notched two power play goals and an assist as the University of Massachusetts Boston rallied for a 5-2 victory versus Saint Michael’s College in ECAC East women’s ice hockey action on Friday at Cairns Arena.
For the Beacons, freshman Kate Webb (Falmouth, Mass.) and sophomores Melissa Belmonte (South Boston, Mass.) and Kerri Zizzo (Medford, Mass.) tallied goals, while junior Kristin Wilson (Grand Forks, N.D.) added a pair of assists. Sophomore Shannon Palmer (Lynn, Mass.) turned aside 24 shots for UMass Boston (6-8-0, 5-6-0 ECAC East).
For the Purple Knights, junior Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32) stopped 55 shots, including 22 in the second period. Sophomore Katie Grable (Vista, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) and freshman Jamie Bernardi (South Boston, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) each netted a goal and an assists for Saint Michael’s (4-13-0, 2-10-0).
Saint Michael’s opened the scoring midway through the first period, taking advantage of a 5-on-3 power play, as Grable wristed a shot past a screened Palmer for her first goal of the season. The Beacons answered six minutes later, as Webb’s shot from the left slot bounced in off of Mason.
The Purple Knights regained their one-goal lead halfway through the second stanza, with Bernardi and Grable connecting once again on the power play. Grable blasted a shot from just inside the blue line, and Bernardi, stationed to the right of the goal, redirected the puck into the upper-left corner for her second career goal. As in the first period, however, UMass Boston again countered, as Wilson notched a man-advantage goal with 8:04 left in the frame.
The visitors took their first lead, 3-2, with five minutes remaining in the second period, as Belmonte slipped a shot through Mason’s legs following a face-off in the Beacons’ offensive zone. Saint Michael’s nearly tied the score twice on breakaways in the final minutes of the period, but was denied both times by Palmer.
In the final period, UMass Boston could not add to its one-goal cushion until just 5:07 left in the contest, as Turner capitalized on a tripping penalty for her second power play tally of the game. The Beacons sealed the win with 2:21 remaining, as Zizzo notched an unassisted power play score.
The two teams complete their weekend series on Saturday at 3 p.m.
