GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Audra Hill (Braintree, Mass.) and sophomore Jessica Lortie (Cooper City, Fla.) each scored a pair of goals Friday night to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-1 victory over the St. Michael's College Purple Knights in an ECAC Women's East game at the USM Ice Arena.

The win snapped the Huskies school record 12-game winless streak that dated back to November. Southern Maine opened the season with a win against M.I.T., then went 0-10-2 until Friday night's victory. The Huskies are now 2-10-2 overall and 2-8-2 in the conference. St. Michael's had its two-game winning streak stopped to slip to 4-11 overall and 2-8 in the conference. The two teams will meet in the second game of the series Saturday afternoon starting at 4:00 p.m.

Hill netted the only goal of the first period when she slipped a soft shot past St. Michael's junior goalie Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt.) for an unassisted shorthanded goal at 16:10. Hill and junior Meaghan Barnaby (Hampton, N.H.) scored goals 16 seconds apart early in the second period to make the score 3-0. Lortie scored the first of her two goals at 6:36 while the Huskies were on the power play.

Junior Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass.) got the Purple Knights on the board at 17:29 of the second period when she knocked in the rebound of a shot by sophomore Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine). Gagne flipped a backhander that USM sophomore goalie Justene Larnerd (Cherry Hill, N.J.) stopped, but the rebound went out in front to Miaskiewicz who buried the puck into the net.

Lortie scored the only goal of the final period at 6:04 while the Huskies were shorthanded. Larnerd finished the game with 22 saves, 14 coming in the final period when the Purple Knights held a 14-6 edge in shots on goal. Mason was credited with 32 saves.
