SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy) scored twice, including the game-winner, as Saint Michael’s College bested Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 5-2, in women’s ice hockey action on Sunday at Cairns Arena.

For the Purple Knights, senior Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) notched a goal and an assist, while classmate Rachel Lamothe (Westboro, Mass./Westboro) and freshman Tracy MacGregor (Danvers, Mass./Proctor Academy) also scored. Junior Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32) turned aside 23 shots as Saint Michael’s (4-10) improves to 8-0 all-time versus MIT, and in the process ties the program record for victories in a season with 10 regular-season contests remaining.

For the Engineers, sophomore Mary Harding (Wilton, Conn.) scored two power play goals, and senior Regina Sullivan (Shoreline, Wash.) stopped 55 of 59 shots for MIT (2-5).

The Engineers opened the scoring 12:42 into the contest, as Harding backhanded a power-play shot past Mason for her first goal of the season. The Purple Knights countered four minutes later, with Lamothe redirecting a shot from classmate Kate Talbot (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) for her second goal of the season, and second goal of the series.

Saint Michael’s took control with three unanswered goals in the second period. MacGregor lit the lamp 4:12 into the frame, scoring her first career goal off of assists from freshman Jamie Bernardi (South Boston, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and Lyons. Just 25 seconds later, Gagne gave the hosts a 3-1 lead with the eventual game-winner, with assists credited to freshman Gabrielle Bourgeois (New Haven, Vt./Middlebury Union) and junior Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass./North Shore Vipers). Gagne connected for her second goal of the game 12:10 into the stanza, off an assist from senior Holly BrandL (Meridan, Conn./Connecticut Clippers), to boost the Purple Knights’ lead to 4-1 after two periods.

Harding cut the MIT deficit to 4-2 1:19 into the final period, but the Engineers failed to pull closer, despite three power play opportunities in the next 12 minutes. Lyons sealed the win for Saint Michael’s with an empty-net tally with 3:07 remaining, tying Gagne for the team lead with her ninth goal of the season.MIT hosts Salve Regina University on Thursday and Friday for a pair of contests, while Saint Michael’s is off next week, and returns to action Jan. 21-22 with a two-game ECAC East series at the University of Southern Maine.
