Phone: (802) 654-2537SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Senior assistant captain Marcy Ring (North Attleboro, Mass./Saint George’s School) stopped all 27 shots she faced as Saint Michael’s College blanked Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 4-0, in ECAC East women’s ice hockey action on Saturday at Cairns Arena.
For the Purple Knights, freshman Gabrielle Bourgeois (New Haven, Vt./Middlebury Union) tallied a goal and an assist, while junior Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass./North Shore Vipers) added a pair of assists. Sophomore Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy) and seniors Rachel Lamothe (Westboro, Mass./Westboro) and Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) also scored for Saint Michael’s (3-10, 2-7 ECAC East), which snapped a six-game losing skid and improved to 7-0 all-time versus MIT.
Senior Regina Sullivan (Shoreline, Wash.) turned back 60 shots, including all 25 she faced in the second period, for MIT (2-4, 0-4).
Saint Michael’s took control with a pair of goals in the first period. Lamothe tallied her first goal of the season at the 1:37 mark off an assist from freshman Jamie Bernardi (South Boston, Mass./Fontbonne Academy), and Lyons lit the lamp 13:35 into the frame off an assist from sophomore Lauren Remmes (Milton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy).
Following a scoreless second period that saw Saint Michael’s outshoot the Engineers 25-8, the Purple Knights clinched the win with two goals in the final 2:40. Gagne notched Saint Michael’s third goal off of assists from Bourgeois and Miaskiewicz, and with 15 seconds remaining, Bourgeois completed the scoring, with assists credited to Miaskiewicz and sophomore Katie Grable (Vista, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks).
Saint Michael’s and MIT complete their weekend series on Sunday at 3:20 p.m. with a non-conference contest.
