Lou DiMasi, the only head coach the Saint Michael’s men’s hockey program has ever known, completed his 23rd season in 2004-05. DiMasi is coming off a successful 2003-04 campaign that ended with a third straight win versus Saint Anselm College in the Division II Championship, as well as the inaugural Northeast-10 Conference Tournament title. In addition, DiMasi coached his 500th game in a 4-3 win at then-15th ranked Babson College on Jan. 17, 2004, and enters the 2005-06 season just one victory shy of the 250-win plateau. His career record currently stands at 249-274-17 (.477). The 2003 ECAC Division II Coach of the Year, DiMasi’s dedication and leadership has brought the team to the ECAC Playoffs 10 times, including eight consecutive times from 1995-2003, and helped him record his 200th career victory in a 5-3 win at Salve Regina University on Nov. 11, 2000. During the 1998-99 season, DiMasi led Saint Michael's to the NCAA Division II title against Southern New Hampshire University, the only time a Saint Michael’s athletic team has won a national championship. That season also completed a run of four consecutive winning campaigns in which the Purple Knights amassed a 65-35-4 record. During the 1997-98 season, DiMasi guided the Purple Knights to a 20-7-0 record and a 12-2-0 mark in the ECAC Central, which stand as the best overall and league records in school history. That same season, the Purple Knights won the ECAC Central regular-season title for the first time. Among his many accomplishments at Saint Michael’s, DiMasi has coached an NCAA Division II Player of the Year (Josh Ralph in 2000), five First-Team All-Americans (Ralph, Darren Beers, Michel Dupont, John Gurskis, and Kyle Lanfear) and more than three dozen players that have earned postseason awards. A native of Somerville, Mass., DiMasi graduated from Christopher Columbus High School, where he was captain of the hockey team. He led his squad to the Eastern Massachusetts playoffs as a senior, and was named to the Catholic All-Conference team. After high school, DiMasi went on to star at Norwich University, where he was a four-year starter for the Cadets. In 1975-76, his senior season, DiMasi was named captain of the club and earned All-New England honors. DiMasi has been enshrined in both the Saint Michael’s and the Norwich University Athletic halls of fame for his outstanding contributions to both the Purple Knights and Cadets hockey programs. His eldest son, Lou, completed a stellar four-year hockey career at Norwich in 2004, and recently completed his first season of professional hockey with the Macon (Ga.) Trax of the Southern Professional Hockey League. His second son, Andy, is a junior defenseman for Saint Michael’s. In addition to his coaching duties at Saint Michael's, he also serves as the College's Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Resident Life.
