Important Moments in 100 Years of Saint Michael's College Varsity Athletics

 

 

 

 



The men's ice hockey team celebrates the College's first National Title in 1999.

21. May 7, 1997: President Marc vanderHeyden announces the hiring of Geraldine Knortz as the College’s Director of Athletics.  Geri is the first woman to serve in this capacity in Saint Michael's history, and succeeds Ed Markey, who retired that year after over 40 years of service to the College.

22. March 13, 1999:  Saint Michael's claims the NCAA Division II Hockey Championship, defeating New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University), 8-5. It is the first (and only) national title in school history.

23. May 2, 1999:  The women's lacrosse team claims its first Northeast-10 Conference Championship, winning at Stonehill, 10-9.

24. October-November, 2000:  The field hockey team wins the Northeast-10 Championship and advances to the NCAA Division II Final Four, becoming the first women's varsity team from the college to participate in an NCAA Championship.

25. 2002-2004:  The men's hockey team claims three straight Division II championships, winning the ECAC Division II title in 2002 and 2003, and the Northeast-10 crown in 2004.
