Remarkable and Influential Athletes in Saint Michael's History

       George W. ‘Doc’ Jacobs

Athletic Director, Coach

Most people refer to Jacobs as the “Father” of SMC athletics.  During his tenure here he led the SMC football team to four consecutive State Championships, and the 1951 team captured the New England College Division Title.  Jacobs led the basketball program to nine State Championships, five New England Championships, and three straight appearances in the National College Tournament in Evansville, Indiana.  He also took the baseball and golf teams to the State Championship, which earned him the distinction as the only coach in history to win Vermont National collegiate championships in four different sports.  Jacobs is a member of the American Association of Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame.  Although he was not the first coach or athletic director in the college’s history, he brought SMC athletics to a new level and will always be remembered as one of the most influential figures in SMC history.
