Julian R. Miller- Class of 1911 Sport: Football Julian Miller was truly an influential athlete as he was the first to break the color barrier at SMC. He became the first African American varsity athlete here, making the football team in 1907. Miller played halfback for the Purple Knights and was a team captain in his junior and senior seasons. Not only was he successful on the athletic field but also in the classroom. Miller won the College’s Gold Medal for Elocution as a freshman and was a founding member of the Newman Lyceum Honor Society on campus. |
