The 1951 Varsity Football Team- New England Champs- “Unbeaten, Untied”

The only team inducted to the SMC Hall of Fame, the 1951 Purple Knights are remembered as one of the greatest small college teams in New England.  As the only undefeated and untied team in New England, the Purple Knights were crowned New England and State Champions.  They were a very dominant squad as they produced three backs with over 1,000 yards and outscored opponents 145-26.  On the defensive side they were equally impressive allowing only 314 total yards passing, which ranked them first in New England, and second in the nation.  They also drew more than 4,000 fans per game.  Although the football tradition has faded, this team will always be remembered.
